Should indeed be a 3-series ti. Not sure what engines were available with that generation of the compact, though. A quick search suggests that it could be a 323ti which had 170 horses when it first hit the markets.

You could get a 318ti
and I think a 325ti. But you might be correct on the 323 as well.

IIRC, the 325ti came later, with the generation that had the seperate headlight design. Looks like the 323ti (E36, e.g. '99) was billed as *23 even though it had a 2,494 cm³ sixpot at the time.
It manages to be reasonably pretty, too, and apparently they are dirt cheap (well, they are here). The E46 ti is neat, too, though.
